I recently had an opportunity to take the iconic train ride through the tea plantations and hills in the heart of Sri Lanka, travelling from Kandy to Ella on the slow train. This is easily one of the most scenic and relaxing train journeys in the world.
Sometimes the journey is even better that the destination, and that’s true, but in this case, Ella is also glorious. I took the opportunity to further my railway adventure with a stroll along the tracks (with my new canine companions) on a beautiful sunny morning to see what other fabulous sights lay ahead.
Taken from the window of the charming colourful carriage
Gloriously green tea plantations
Atmospheric mist high in the hills
Enjoying the stroll from Ella station
Rustic wooden overgrown tracks add to the beauty and magic
Old fashioned train rumbles along as it approaches Ella station
Beautiful, lush greenery and stunning panoramic views from the tracks
A quaint little place along the line, a lovely peaceful stop to refresh and enjoy the surrounds and listen to the birds
I wonder where these lead to…?
Viewpoint to take in the splendour of the famous Ella rock
Light at the end of the tunnel
Magnificent architecture of the iconic Nine Arch Bridge
